Closet Doors

Closet doors can present a cleaning challenge like few other items within a home. Ranging from complicated louver systems to those with fabric or mirrored fronts, these doors just seem to collect dust, dirt and fingerprints. So, what's a homeowner to do?

There are different strategies that can be used to help keep closet doors clean, dust free and looking great. Which method to use will depend a lot upon the actual door's construction, but there are things that can be done with almost any door to assist in keeping the dirt and dust off and the surface looking great.

Louver closet doors present one of the biggest challenges for cleaning. The basic design of these doors opens up all kinds of nooks and crannies for the collection of dust. To keep these doors clean, there are specialized cleaning tools that can be used to get between the louvers. If special tools are not available, consider using a thin cloth and running it through the louvers or even a feather duster with a good reach. Once the door is cleaned, spray it with a dust repellant. Make sure clothes or other items behind the doors are protected during this process. If doors are properly sprayed, a feather duster will generally do the trick for maintenance cleaning.

Mirrored closet doors are up there in the top list for difficulty in keeping clean. It seems that these doors just collect fingerprints. Use basic cleaning supplies for removing the prints and try a specialized mirror protector for repelling future prints. The best way to keep up with these doors is to simply wipe they down frequently.

Fabric closet doors will often hide the dirt and dust they collect, which is both good and bad. The best way to keep these clean is to use a feather duster or beater to remove dust from the fibers. Then employ a fabric protection spray to help keep dirt, stains and spills on the surface. The same kind of protector that's used on carpeting and furniture can help, but do make sure to spot test an area of the fabric.

Closet doors can be great for adding a decorator touch to any room starting with the basic architecture. Keeping these doors clean can be tricky, however. Some doors will require more maintenance than others, but with a few precautionary steps the process doesn't have to be painful. When treated properly, closet doors can look great all the time.
