Closet Design

Many would agree that a regular closet design does not provide for the best possible storage capacity. There is a lot of wasted space between the bottom of hanging clothes and the floor. Plus, most people simply do not need as much hanging space as is provided. Add to that the fact that most designs waste a lot of space in the top of the closet and complete overhauls are often favored and quite in order.

Going about a do-it-yourself closet design can be a great deal of fun. The truth is there are some great options out there as far as ready-made storage is concerned. While specialty jobs do create great results, they can get a little costly. Considering this, many opt to make their own designs to work form.

Creating a sketch for a new closet design is often one of the most important things to do before shopping for or trying to build storage devices. To do this:

Empty the closet.

It is possible to handle the sketching and measurements for a closet design without doing this, but this step can make it a whole lot easier. Take everything out. Get rid of the junk. Size up what needs to go back in.

Brainstorm for ideas.

This step involves nothing more than looking at what needs to go back into the closet and the closet's actual available space. Take a look at how clothes and items can be best stored. If there are a lot of shoes, for example, a special rack for the floor to mid level can be great. Put pants and shirts on a rail above and the space can be used to its fullest. Maybe a small drawer system would come in handy for accessories and delicates? Just come up with some basic ideas for closet design at this point.

Measure the space.

This is the time to actually start making a closet design sketch. Measure out a mock up of the closet. Consider how much space really needs to be used for hanging items. Consider removing the racks where they are not needed. Draw out estimated mock ups of storage items that can or should go in. This will give a good rough estimation of what the finished closet should look like.

Jot down notes.

With a better idea of what needs to go in and how much space is available, this is the time to write down some instructional notes for the closet design. Consider the storage items that might be purchased or home built. Write down the ballpark sizes they need to be: the minimum and maximum. This will help in the building or buying process.

Shop, build, install.

Now's the time to either find the right storage items to fit or build them. The next step involves making the closet design sketch come to life by installing the items.

Starting out with a closet design sketch that has accurate representations of size available can be very helpful. Anyone can make a better use of their closet space by brainstorming and bringing different storage units into play.
